San Diego Legion in PCRL collaboration

SoCal’s sole MLR team will join with PCRL to deliver a full day of rugby on December 10.

Pacific Coast Rugby League are delighted to announce that rugby union’s MLR side San Diego Legion will join the PCRL event on December 10, in a move that will see a total of four rugby events fill the whole day at Cal. State University Long Beach - league and union, men’s and women’s.

Kicking off the day at 9am will be the PCRL women’s combine, where California’s women will be put through their paces in a 2 hour combine delivered by USA Hawks national coaches Ady Cooney and Ben Calverley.

Next, at 11:15, the Legion will take on Belmont Shore Rugby in a men’s u18 match showcasing their developing talent.

At 1pm, it’s time for the showpiece Cooney-Calverley Cup. The San Diego Barracudas men led by captain Eli Welsh will be hunting for their first win over their Los Angeles Mongrel neighbors to the north, whilst the Mongrel will be hoping to maintain their advantage over the Cudas.

Finally, to round out the day, the Legion and Belmont Shore will face off once again, this time with Belmont doing battle against the Legion academy.

PCRL secretary and dual-code fanatic Chad Cooper said, “the two rugby codes will work together to share the beauty of both games on December 10. In the US we co-exist and thrive together, an example to the rest of the world of how it can be successful.”

This partnership marks the first event in a burgeoning relationship as both organizations aim to grow the great game of rugby in San Diego and Southern California.
